Though the warmest season might be behind us, there is still a chance to get some autumn sun next month. A beautiful Greek island stays warm into October and has direct flights from the UK.

Situated in the Aegean Sea as part of the picturesque Dodecanese islands, Kos is celebrated for its stunning beaches, pleasant weather, and rich historical heritage. In October, this charming island has an average daily temperature of 20C and highs of 26C, making it an ideal spot for a late-season holiday. With approximately eight hours of sunshine each day and gentle winds averaging 4.1mph, visitors can bask in comfortable, pleasant weather. It also remains largely dry, particularly at the beginning of the month. Kos is renowned not just for its beautiful beaches but also for its significant historical background. The island is famously known as the birthplace of Hippocrates, the ancient Greek physician often hailed as the father of medicine. This rich historical context adds a layer of intrigue to your visit, allowing you to explore ancient ruins and historical sites while enjoying the island’s natural beauty.

The island’s coastline features an array of stunning beaches, from secluded coves to bustling sandy stretches. Whether you prefer lounging on the soft golden sands or taking a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear waters, Kos offers diverse beach experiences.

Additionally, the hot summer and warm October temperatures ensure that the sea remains inviting for swimming and water activities.

Visiting this Greek island in October provides a serene alternative to the peak summer months. The island is less crowded, allowing for a more relaxed experience at popular attractions and beaches.

It’s a fantastic time to explore the island’s charming settlements, such as Kos Town, with its vibrant markets and whitewashed buildings. The town also has many hotels, restaurants, and nightclubs forming its “bar street.”

The seaside village of Kardamena is a popular resort for young holidaymakers (primarily from the UK and Scandinavia) and has a large number of bars and nightclubs.

You could also venture into the picturesque countryside for hiking and sightseeing, with Kos offering a variety of outdoor activities.  You can explore ancient ruins, including the Asklepion, a sanctuary dedicated to healing and medicine, or visit the remnants of medieval castles.

The island’s rich cultural heritage is complemented by its excellent local cuisine, where you can savour fresh seafood and traditional Greek dishes.
