This scenic city often gets forgotten about, it’s a quiet yet beautiful location that’s no doubt worth visiting. In summer, this cathedral city attracts visitors from all over the world and it’s just a short train ride away from Dover (30 minutes) and London (90 minutes).

Canterbury is famous for its beautiful picturesque scenery and has been compared to Paris. It’s a quintessential English city home to cobbled streets and incredible gardens. Its old-fashioned buildings are a reminder of its history but the city is also home to a range of modern shops – there’s something for everyone in this quaint part of the country.

Reports say British holidaymakers have even likened it to the City of Love thanks to its abundance of artisan shops, boutique galleries, and quaint cafes that create a romantic atmosphere reminiscent of the French capital.

One must-see while you’re there is Canterbury Cathedral. This famous grand structure is the centre point of the settlement.

UNESCO has granted world heritage status to part of the city, including St Martin’s Church, St Augustine’s Abbey and the Cathedral.

A visitor on Tripadvisor said: “One for the bucket list! Photos do not do this justice. To see it in person is incredible!

“We did the tour and the guide was so knowledgeable and passionate, it really made it special.

“Everyone was professional and so well organised. The area around the cathedral is wonderful to wander through.”

Canterbury’s medieval city centre bustles with famous name stores and exclusive boutiques while the picturesque side streets are home to smaller specialist shops, pubs and restaurants making it an exciting day trip.

Another must-do while you’re there is to visit Westgate Gardens. This scenic area looks like it’s straight out of a film.

A visitor on Tripadvisor said: “It is one of the most picturesque neighborhoods/parks in which I’ve ever walked.

“There is so much to see, and every turn brings another great photo op. Make this a priority when visiting Canterbury.”

The city is also known for Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, a historic text famous for having stood the test of time. At more than 600 years old, this text is known throughout the world.

If you’re looking for a summer day trip or for a unique place to visit, Canterbury could be the perfect place to enjoy a break.
