A UK town with a population of only around 4,000, which is reportedly visited by millions of people each year, has been slammed as “overrated”. TikToker @philc84 travels the country, frankly reviewing its towns and villages, and Bowness-on-Windermere has been a recent victim. The content creator said that he has “no idea why” Lake Windemere is one of the most popular places for people to visit in Britain, asking his viewers if they can think of a “more overrated beauty spot”.
“The Lake District is basically a s*** load of spa hotels, with a tiny bit of natural beauty crammed in between them, and endless coaches bringing in tourists from all over the world.” The TikToker then shared a bit of advice, namely that “clever young couples have learned that, during term time, these spa hotels are a bit of a bargain”. The area has also seen lots of bars open, as there’s “nothing to do in the evening” except grab a drink.
“The locals have been left shell-shocked, wondering where it all went wrong,” Phil said.
Later in the video, Phil found the going tough as he encountered lots of school children in the Beatrix Potter attraction.
“Chris alive that was bad,” he said upon exiting.
Moving on, he talked about the lake’s boats, which he explained are the eight most popular tourist attractions in the UK.
The lake itself has been at the centre of a pollution row, as, in March, campaigners claimed that data showed sewage had been spilled illegally into the body of water on a record number of days last year.
United Utilities claimed the analysis was “inaccurate” and some of the figures were “erroneous”.
“A hell of a lot of people want to lap up what is really quite an average lake,” Phil said.
“A deadly combination of NPC tourists and ticket prices meant that I was never going to get on one of the cruises, so I hired my own boat instead.
“It was £35, and I recommend you do the same should you come – which you probably won’t.”
You can fit 10 people on the vessels, make use of bluetooth speakers and bring food and drink onboard.
Later, he slammed the people who buy a boat and dock it at Lake Windemere as the equivalent of “buying a Porsche GT3 and only being able to drive it around Sainsbury’s car park”.
He added: “What’s the point?”
Beers “hover around £6”, the reviewer went on.
He concluded: “If I was in my 20s and away with a girlfriend on a spa break, I’d love it here.
“But the locals would absolutely hate me.”
