The only royals who can step in for Princess Kate and Prince William as Kate recovers

Even though the monarch is expected to keep working from hospital, his wife, Queen Camilla, is expected to support him while he recovers from the procedure.

Notably, the monarch by law has enlisted the Counsellors of State to represent him or undertake his duties in the case of illness or absence abroad.

The Counsellors of State include the monarch’s spouse and the next four people in the line of succession who are over the age of 21. At the moment, these are the Queen, Prince William, Prince Harry, Prince Andrew and Princess Beatrice.

However, only working members of the Firm can act as Counsellors of State which rules Harry and Andrew out.

But that leaves only a handful of senior working royals to juggle the workload until the monarch and the Princess of Wales are back in good health.

The Princess Royal, who was crowned the hardest-working royal in 2023 after completing the most royal engagements (457), is likely to be helping cover for her brother and Princess Kate.

The Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, Prince Edward and Sophie, are also expected to help juggle the workload as they’ve recently started taking on more roles within the Firm.
