A huge £8bn dam in China stands almost as tall as the iconic Eiffel Tower.
The incredible Lianghekou Dam sits on the Yalong River in China’s southwestern Sichuan Province, and its hydroelectric plant is expected to produce 11bn kWh of power.
The first generator came online in 2021, with construction being finished by the end of 2023.
The dam is 295 metres (967 feet) tall, just below the Paris landmark, which is around 300 metres (984 feet) tall.
The huge construction project cost around £7.8bn to build.
Preliminary work at the site started in 2009, with the first major work beginning around five years later in 2014.
Behind the dam, the name of which means Mouth of Two Rivers, sits a huge 8,728,949 acre reservoir.
The size of the reservoir also means the dam can regulate the river’s flow, increasing the output of China’s other hydroelectric dams further downstream.
Although huge, the dam is not the highest in China, with the Jinping-I Dam being the tallest in the world at 1,001 feet.
The country is considered the world leader in constructing major dam projects, followed by Turkey and Japan.
The country’s most iconic dam is the Three Gorges Dam, the largest hydroelectric power station in the world.
