Despite many thinking that the fast lane is the most dangerous place on the motorway, experts warn that, in fact, the middle lane carries the most risk for drivers.
A motoring expert at Plates Express explains the dangers: “The middle lane isn’t dangerous because of speed—it’s dangerous because of misuse. When drivers sit there unnecessarily, they create congestion, confusion, and in some cases, road rage. Misusing the middle lane is not just frustrating—it can also fall under careless driving.”
The middle lane is a highly important part of the motorway, letting cars overtake steady drivers in the left-hand lane.
However, many choose to sit in this lane for no real reason, even after there is no traffic on the left.
Hogging the middle lane causes a multitude of problems, including:
- Increased congestion – Left lanes remain under-used while traffic builds up in the middle and right lanes.
- Frustration and aggression – Drivers forced into overtakes often become impatient, raising tensions on the road.
- Higher accident risk – Every additional lane change increases the chance of a collision.
- Fuel waste – Stop–start driving and extra overtakes burn more fuel, increasing running costs.
As this a breach of the Highway Code, where it says that you must keep left unless overtaking, it can lead to fines and penalty points.

Many drivers have different reasons for staying in the middle lane, such as avoiding lorries, convenience or just a lack of awareness.
However, with 1 in 3 drivers admitting to middle-lane hogging, there is a high chance for some negative consequences to arise, not just for other road users but also for yourself.
This is because drivers could face higher insurance premiums if their record shows careless driving offences.
Plates Express offers advice on a few simple habits that could greatly improve motorway safety for all involved, such as keeping left, checking mirrors often, avoiding lingering and overtaking safely.
