Prince Louis could be set to inherit the ‘Duke of York’ title once Prince William becomes monarch, it has been reported.

The Dukedom title was gifted to Prince Andrew by the late Queen Elizabeth II when he married Sarah Ferguson back in 1986.

It was also previously held by the late Queen’s father, King George VI and her grandfather, King George V.

As per tradition, the Duke of York title is typically granted to the second eldest son of the reigning monarch. But this isn’t the reason why Prince Andrew’s eldest daughter, Princess Beatrice, can’t inherit the title for herself.

The Dukedom of York, like other royal dukedoms, can only be passed on to a male heir. Since Prince Andrew and his ex-wife Sarah share two daughters, his title will revert to the Crown after he dies.

As long as the title is still vacant when William becomes King, the now-six-year-old could take on the Dukedom.

Prince William and Prince Harry both received Dukedoms on their wedding days in 2011 and 2018. William was previously – prior to taking on the title of Prince of Wales – known as Duke of Cambridge.

Harry, who married former actress Meghan Markle in Windsor, has held the title of Duke of Sussex since their wedding day on May 19, 2018.

Although 11-year-old Prince George is set to become King one day, the Prince and Princess of Wales are reportedly “acutely aware” of the challenges that their two youngest children – including nine-year-old Princess Charlotte – could face.

The couple are said to be working hard to “make them feel every bit as special, loved and valued as George”.
