The full list of bank holidays for 2024 and why you’ll get fewer days off next year

During the course of a year, the UK has several bank holidays. Most of the time these fall on Mondays, but occasionally they fall on other days of the week.

Each year, the number of bank holidays varies. This can be for several reasons which are mainly to do with the Royal Family.

For example, when Queen Elizabeth II celebrated her Platinum Jubilee there was a bank holiday and when she died there was a bank holiday.

When King Charles was crowned this year, the nation had another day off.

It is for this reason that there will be fewer bank holidays in 2024 than there were in 2023, but the first will come sooner than you think.

The first bank holiday will be on Monday, January 1 on New Year’s Day. However, after this, there won’t be another bank holiday for several months.

The next day off will be on Friday, March 29 when the UK celebrates Good Friday. Soon after Easter Monday gives the nation another day off on April 1.

On Monday, May 6 there is the early May bank holiday and on Monday, May 27 there is the Spring bank holiday. Monday, August 26 marks the Summer bank holiday and the last one of the warm months.

After this, the next bank holidays won’t come until Wednesday, December 25 and Thursday December 26.

Pending any major royal events such as a death, these six will be the only bank holidays the UK has in 2024, one fewer than in 2023 when there was an extra day off to mark King Charles’ Coronation.

Overall there were nine bank holidays in 2023, one less than in 2022, but far more than next year which will see the fewest bank holidays since 2021.
