DETROIT – The Jets mounted a valiant comeback against the Lions but lost 31-24 to fall to 1-2 this season. Here are some thoughts and observations from the game:
1. The great moral victory debate seems to be raging among Jets fans. This loss is really in the eye of the beholder. You can look at it and say that the Jets played tough against a good opponent and there were encouraging signs from Geno Smith, Garrett Wilson and Kenyon Sadiq. Or you can look at it and say the Jets lost another game they could have won.
My view is more along the latter. I understand Jets fans feeling encouraged by Sunday’s performance but there also has to be a sense of disappointment. They were tied 24-24 in the fourth quarter and the defense allowed Detroit to go down the field and score in four plays. Then, it felt like the Jets were driving to tie the game up again when they allowed Chuck Clark to drill Smith on a blitz and cause a fumble that ended the game.
I have seen a few things that I think people are completely wrong about. There is this sense that the Jets would not have played a game like this last year, but they did. They lost five one-score games last year. A year ago in Week 3, they mounted a comeback against the Buccaneers and lost the game 29-27, prompting Aaron Glenn to announce they were not the Same Old Jets anymore.
