This road is one of the longest in Chile and one of the loneliest places to drive.

Route 5 is part of the Pan-American Highway. It runs for over 2,000 miles from the Peruvian border all the way to Puerto Montt where it connects to the ferry over to Chiloe.

The long and lonesome road passes through woodland and open desert and features blank expanses which make it dangerous to drive through as concentration slips.

While driving on this route, it can get very foggy very quickly and steep drops make the road even more perilous.

Route 5 gives you an idea about what driving after the end of the world would be like as miles and miles slip past you without a single sign of life.

Many car enthusiasts are keen to take on epic journeys across barren landscapes and while this Chile route is one of the most notable empty road trips, other countries have similar popular desolate routes.

Australia is known for its vast empty landscapes with and its Tanami Track route is one of the longest and most deserted drives.

Starting at Alice Springs and ending Halls Creek, drivers travel a distance of 643 miles but barely see anything along the way.

This route through outback Australia includes passing through remote Indigenous communities, miles of desert terrain and cattle stations.

Another fascinating route, this time in the USA, is from Grand Teton to Yellowstone, Wyoming.

Starting at Jackson and ending at Mammoth, this route covers 250 miles and passes through incredible scenery.

On this route, drivers will pass through volcanic features, geysers, lakes, rivers and waterfalls. But despite this beautiful nature, drivers won’t pass by any signs of civilization.

In Europe, one of the most fascinating routes you can take is in Switzerland – at a much shorter distance of 75 miles, this loop from Andermatt is a drive like no other.

The Susten-Grimsel-Furka loop takes three alpine passes and features some of the most unbelievable scenery the country has to offer.

You’ll pass through forests, glaciers, reservoirs and mountains – the best time to take the route is in summer.
