The common washing machine mistake that could ‘trigger sneezing, coughing and congestion’

Many of us use our washing machine a couple of times a week – it’s quick and efficient, extends the life of your clothes, and gives a more thorough clean than hand washing.

But according to Eleanor Potter, from home improvement retailer Plumbworld, few of us actually bother to read the instruction manual upon purchase, and failing to do one particular thing could make you ill.

Eleanor told Wales Online: “Kitchen appliances can be tricky devices to use, with various settings to carry out various tasks and certain rules we have to follow.

“One of the biggest mistakes people make when using their washing machine is closing the door straight after taking their laundry out.

“This means the appliance is not allowed to enjoy much-needed air circulation and therefore provides an ideal breeding ground for mildew, mould and nasty smells.

“This mould can then trigger certain symptoms such as sneezing, coughing and congestion, so it’s important to leave the washing machine door ajar for a few hours after use.”

Mould build-up is common for washing machines and should be removed regularly to help prevent health problems and to ensure clothes are being fully cleaned.

This can be done by applying a small amount of a bleach-based mould cleaner to a cloth and thoroughly wiping the inside of the appliance. Particular attention should be paid to the rubber seal.

Other tips to ensure your machine works as efficiently as possible is to clear out the filter – normally located in a bottom corner at the front of the machine – every four to six weeks, and give the detergent draw a thorough scrub to banish any unwanted gunk.

Eleanor added: “As with any household appliance, carrying out a few simple tasks on a regular basis should ensure the level of performance doesn’t drop off and you will get years’ more use out of your washing machine.”
