Drivers across Britain are continuing to feel the pinch at the pumps, but new figures reveal where motorists can still find the lowest petrol prices in the country – and it’s supermarkets leading the way.
According to the Roadtrip app’s latest data, as of October 22, 2025, Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury’s are offering some of the cheapest rates nationwide, with petrol as low as 124.9p per litre in certain towns.
While fuel prices are still fluctuating, supermarket competition is helping to keep costs down for millions of UK households. The average supermarket rate currently sits at around 132p per litre, far below the national average seen at motorway service stations, where prices can climb to a staggering 170.9p per litre.
At the top of the leaderboard is Tesco Beech Valley in Dungannon, Northern Ireland, selling unleaded petrol at just 124.9p per litre – making it the cheapest in the country today. The next best deal is at Asda Sweep Road in Cookstown, priced at 125.7p per litre, followed closely by Sainsbury’s Kennedy Centre on Falls Road, Belfast, offering petrol at 125.9p.
Across Northern Ireland, competition remains fierce, with several Tesco and Sainsbury’s branches around Lisburn, Carrickfergus and Banbridge all listed among the top ten cheapest in the UK. The data reflects a continuing pattern seen in previous months – Northern Ireland consistently outperforms the rest of the UK for low petrol prices, thanks in part to regional pricing and lower logistics costs.
Meanwhile, motorists in England and Wales are paying noticeably more. Even among supermarket chains, the lowest prices outside Northern Ireland rarely dip below 128p per litre. Drivers in Nottingham can currently find Asda Strelley Road offering petrol for 128.7p, while Sainsbury’s Bath Road sits at 128.9p, making them some of the most competitive mainland options.
Elsewhere, Asda Battle Road in St Leonards and Asda Ormskirk Road in Liverpool are both charging 129.7p, still comfortably below the UK average of 134.6p.
As of this week, supermarket averages stand as follows: Asda – 130.4p, Sainsbury’s – 132.2p, and Tesco – 132.3p, according to Roadtrip’s nationwide monitoring. Independent brands, including Jet (133.9p) and Texaco (135.1p), follow closely behind, while premium names like Shell (141.0p) and BP (151.2p) remain among the most expensive options at the pump.
That price gap has widened dramatically this autumn. Motorway drivers are still paying around 155.7p per litre for petrol and 140.1p per litre on A-roads, according to figures from the AA. The motoring organisation said the difference between motorway and local petrol prices can add up to £15 per tank, with some drivers now actively planning routes around cheaper filling stations.
AA president Edmund King recently warned that the “outrageous” mark-up at many service stations has forced motorists to treat motorway refuelling as “a last resort”. “Even with the extra costs of 24-hour staffing and parking, charging 20 to 30p a litre above the UK average is simply unfair,” he said.
At the other end of the scale, petrol can cost over 41p more per litre depending on where you fill up – meaning a 55-litre tank could set drivers back an extra £22 in some regions.
The most expensive forecourts are situated on major Scottish motorways, with one service area on the M74 between junctions 4 and 6 charging 170.9p per litre. Less than an hour away, prices at the M90 junction 1A drop to just 129.9p.
For comparison, drivers at motorway services such as Stafford on the M6 or Strensham on the M5 are paying upwards of £95 to fill a 55-litre tank, the equivalent of £1.77 per litre, according to a recent RAC study. That’s more than £1,200 a year in additional fuel costs compared to the cheapest supermarket towns.
