Fans of The Buccaneers are urged to delve into this lavish period drama, inspired by another novel from the esteemed author, Edith Wharton.
The popular Apple TV+ series set in the Gilded Age has recently made a comeback for its second season, which is set to wrap up on Wednesday, 6th August.
The plot revolves around a group of five affluent, defiant young women who relocate from the United States to London in the 1870s, instantly causing a sensation with their scandalous affairs and illicit activities.
Originating from an incomplete novel by Wharton, The Buccaneers has garnered a fervent cult following due to its provocative feminist themes and audacious plot twists.
While awaiting a potential third season, this 1993 film based on arguably Wharton’s most acclaimed novel is certainly worth a watch, reports the Mirror.
Directed by Hollywood luminary Martin Scorsese and boasting a star-studded cast including Daniel Day Lewis, Winona Ryder and Michelle Pfeiffer, The Age of Innocence is currently available on Prime Video.
This grand romance, also set in the 1870s, follows a wealthy New York lawyer torn between two women – the conformist May Welland (portrayed by Ryder) and the unconventional Countess Ellen Olenska (Pfeiffer).
Best known for his crime sagas such as Goodfellas and The Wolf of Wall Street, many film enthusiasts argue that The Age of Innocence is secretly one of Scorsese’s finest works.
One glowing five-star Google review heaped on the acclaim: “This film is every bit as brutal as the vintage Scorsese mafia films. Only, here it’s all emotional. No dead bodies. The film is a lesson in diplomacy and subtlety to a world that has become almost irredeemably overt.
“The cast is marvellous, includes some all time greats. The costumes, cinematography – very appealing. Underrated. Masterpiece.”
Another viewer concurred: “Such an intelligent and beautifully made Scorsese film, faithful to the novel for which Edith Wharton won a Pulitzer Prize.
“Watching this movie again, 32 years later, the young actors are all so strikingly gorgeous, especially the radiant Michelle Pfeiffer. The theme of an individual struggling against the constraints of society is timeless.”
The accolades persisted on Letterboxd, where one enthusiast gushed: “One of the great underrated films of the 1990s and probably the most neglected film of Martin Scorsese’s career.
“It is a brilliant costume drama with a repressed but emotive performance from Daniel Day Lewis, matched in almost every scene by Michelle Pfeiffer.”
Meanwhile, a final reviewer made a striking assertion: “Rewatch confirms what I’ve suspected for a while: this is Martin Scorsese’s very best movie.”
Film lovers and literature enthusiasts alike should seize this chance to immerse themselves in the sumptuous and devastating universe of The Age of Innocence at the earliest opportunity.
The Age of Innocence is available to stream on Prime Video. The Buccaneers season 2 concludes Wednesday, 6th August on Apple TV+.
