The 'best' war movie of all time now available to stream on Amazon Prime

The war film that has taken both critics and audiences by storm is now available to stream in the UK. Warfare, currently ranked number one in IMDb’s war movie category, is now on Amazon Prime Video, offering viewers a chance to experience what many are calling the definitive war film of the modern era.

Released in late 2023, Warfare quickly gained momentum among cinephiles and war film enthusiasts alike for its gritty realism, emotional weight, and technical brilliance. Directed by Thomas Keller, the film offers a harrowing yet deeply human portrayal of World War II through the eyes of a multinational special operations unit thrust into a covert mission behind enemy lines.

Keller, who previously won Best Director at the Academy Awards for Ashes of Winter, has been praised for crafting a war film that avoids glorification and instead focuses on the psychological and moral complexities of combat.

The film stars Lucas Brandt, Arjun Mehta, and Emilia Novak, whose performances have been described as career-defining.

Brandt plays a disillusioned British officer struggling with guilt, while Mehta portrays a young radio operator forced to reconcile duty with conscience.

Novak’s role as a civilian-turned-medic has earned her multiple award nominations for her quiet, commanding presence.

With a current IMDb rating of 9.4 out of 10 in the war movie category, Warfare surpasses many longtime genre classics including Saving Private Ryan, The Thin Red Line, and Platoon.

The film’s haunting score by Icelandic composer Hildur Guðnadóttir and its immersive sound design have also drawn acclaim.

Critics have lauded the film’s emotional resonance as much as its technical achievements.

“Warfare doesn’t just depict war, it forces the audience to sit with it, question it, and mourn with it,” wrote The Guardian.

Now available to rent or purchase for £4.99 on Amazon Prime Video, Warfare gives UK audiences the chance to witness what is already being called a landmark in war cinema.
