The best game you've never heard of is about to leave PS Plus

In terms of quality new game releases, it’s fair to say that 2024 has been a mixed bag for PlayStation Plus Extra subscribers.

Nothing exemplifies this more than the December line-up, which is another middling batch of PS4 and PS5 games.

The December line-up is headlined by a personal favourite in Sonic Frontiers, but also includes high-profile flop Forspoken, as well as a few lesser-known titles like A Space for the Unbound, PHOGS and Biped. The new games will be available to download and play from the morning of December 17.

Even more bad news is that a whopping 16 games will leave the service on the same day, including a fantastic hidden gem with an 84% score on Metacritic and a Very Positive rating on Steam.

It’s also one of the best boomer shooters I’ve played in the past few years.

Prodeus is a first-person shooter that plays a bit like classic Doom, albeit with a few modern flourishes.

As the developer points out, it combines lo-fi pixels with high-tech particle effects and buckets of blood. Add in a super smooth frame-rate, and the result is a game that looks and plays great.

If you can’t quite picture what I mean, then the trailer below will show you exactly what you’re missing.

Prodeus also features a wealth of meaty weapons, a selection of entertaining multiplayer modes, and a campaign that you should just about be able to complete if you get started now.

If you don’t fancy rushing it, you can pick up Prodeus for £19.99 from the PlayStation Store. Don’t be surprised, however, if it gets a discount in the upcoming Christmas sale.

Other games leaving PS Plus Extra this month include Stranger of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin, which is arguably the highest-profile game of the bunch.

That’s on top of Dead Island and Dead Island Riptide, as well as entertaining detective game Judgement by SEGA.

You can also say goodbye to a trio of Mega Man games, including Mega Man 11, Mega Man Legacy Collection and Mega Man Legacy Collection 2.

Finally, consider this your last chance to enjoy games such as Metal Hellsinger, Soulstice, Vampire The Masquerade Coteries of New York, Moonscars, Grime, Tinykin, Evil Genius 2 World Domination and GigaBash.
