In recent years, Christmas markets have emerged as a staple in most towns and cities throughout the festive period.

Some consist of nothing more than wooden huts, shoddy lights and lukewarm mulled wine but others are far more impressive.

The south west in particular has a number of fantastic Christmas markets to turn even the greatest Ebenezer Scrooge into Buddy the Elf.

One festive road trip allows you to take in three of the best whilst blaring out Christmas songs as you drive through some of Britain’s most beautiful and best-loved countryside.

The south west Christmas market road trip starts in the historic city of Winchester with its lively atmosphere and quaint huts is considered one of the best in Europe.

Nestled within the historic grounds of the stunning Hampshire city, complete with paved streets and meandering streams, it’s an ideal location to embrace the festive season.

Open until 8pm on Fridays and Saturdays, festive attendees are able to browse a range of market stalls, selling gifts, clothing and accessories before indulging in the abundance of food and drink on offer.

During the rest of the week, the market is open until 6pm and entry is free. But the market isn’t just about Christmas shopping; there are also live performances on the community stage, featuring the Salvation Army and the Winchester Community Choir, reports Surrey Live.

The next stop through the stunning Cotswolds brings you to Salisbury.

Salisbury Christmas market is perfect for families with pantomimes and performances planned throughout December.

The Santa’s grotto allows children to make their case for a place on the good list and the atmosphere throughout is extra special for little ones who still believe in the magic of Christmas.

44 miles away lies Bath, the last stop on the festive road trip where over 230 stalls offer a variety of products including jewellery and homeware illuminated by stunning light shows.

Open for only 18 days, there is a very limited amount of time in which to soak up the exceptional Christmas offering in the shadow of the historic city.
