A European city has been named the most walkable destination in the world.
Munich, in southeastern Germany, was named by Compare the Market as offering the most walkable terrain in the world.
To judge the winner, the comxpany looked at several factors, including each city’s number of walking trails, the city’s average rainfall, and how safe the streets are following bad weather.
Public transport, biking options and other alternatives to cars were also taken into account.
The findings showed that Munich had an enormous 1.4million km of bike trails, or over 912,000 miles, the second highest of anywhere in the world.
A majority, 86%, of residents live within a kilometre, or 0.62 miles, or a car-free space, which also ranked second.
Though public transport was the third most expensive of the listed cities, it was fourth highest for safety and second highest for residents’ proximity to healthcare and education facilities.
Munich was followed by Milan, Warsaw, Helsinki and Paris in terms of walkability.
The only non-European city in the top ten list is Tokyo, which came sixth.
There are a number of beautiful walks to take through Munich, including through the old town past the famous Marianplatz, where tourists can watch the famous Glockenspiel in action.
Marianplatz, literally meaning Mary’s Place, has been the city’s main square since 1158 and features the Glockenspiel, a mechanical clock, in the facade of the Town Hall.
Famous for its life-size characters, the clock re-enacts scenes from Munich’s history twice every day.
Elsewhere, there are bike tours available through the old town and the Englischer Garten, a large public park in the centre of the city which stretches across 3.7 square km, or 1.4 square miles.
The Eisbach canal flows through the park and in one section features an artificial wave popular with surfers.
Munich also boasts famous Bavarian cuisine across its pubs and restaurants, including the famous Hofbrauhaus where a band in lederhosen sings for the crowds.
There are also market stalls featuring food, drink and items to buy in the nearby Viktualienmarkt.
