The beautiful little Thai island that’s 33C in May | Travel News | Travel

Sun-seekers can make the great escape to this island in Thailand, so small that it’s only accessible by foot, with no roads or cars in sight. The Phi Phi Islands is a small group of islands in the south of Thailand, off of the coast of Krabi, and its main hot spot is Koh Phi Phi Don.

Known for its idyllic white sands, cheap drinks and breathtaking viewpoints, it’s an adventurer’s dream. Not to mention, this May, ahead of the big summer rush, the area is set to see high temperatures of 33C. This means you can soak up the sunshine for less money, ahead of the island’s busier periods. When it comes to beaches, this island has the best pick. Long Beach is a popular spot for its white sands, crystal-clear waters and, you guessed it, its long stretch of the island. This means there’s always plenty of room for you to set up your sun spot for the day or snorkel straight from the shore.

On the northeast side of the island, you can unwind on the serene sands of Laem Tong Beach. Home to a number of longtail boats, this place offers dive tours and water sports, with restaurants and, of course, soft sands for sunbathing.

Aside from its natural beauty, Koh Phi Phi Don also has quite the reputation for its nightlife, that costs less than in most areas of Britain. Local beer prices range from 50 to 100 baht, which is up to just £2.

There are panoramic views from the hike up to Phi Phi Viewpoint, which is only accessible via a steep and rocky path. This isn’t a trail for the fainthearted, but if you’re feeling adventurous, the view from the top is worth every drop of sweat and potential scuff of the knee.

With the island being so small and only reachable by a boat after flying into mainland Thailand, there are limited accommodation options. With this in mind, it’s best to seek after your stay early, and there are options for every kind of traveller, from cheap and cheerful hostels to 4-star hotels and less-disturbed luxury locations.

Offshore, the Phi Phi Islands are home to the world-renowned Maya Bay. A secluded beach, encircled by limestone cliffs and a popular spot for baby sharks, Maya Bay appeared in the Leonardo DiCaprio movie The Beach.

The spectacular spot forms part of the Ko Phi Phi Le island and is easy to reach via boat from the main island of Koh Phi Phi Don. Many tourist-based businesses offer trips to the famous spot, which can be booked directly at the last minute or pre-booked online.

It’s worth noting that Koh Phi Phi Don is a tourist hot spot, and so for those looking for a more authentic Thai cultural experience, its neighbouring islands may be more suited to you. A common complaint from those staying on the island is its echoes of loud music, as its visitors party into the night.
