A stunning city in North Africa enjoys 20C heat in January with 3-and-a-half-hour direct flights from the UK.

Marrakesh, Morocco’s fourth largest city, has become a beloved retreat for sunseekers looking to escape Britain’s wintry gloom.

The city sees average temperatures of 19C in January with just three days of rain, according to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) data.

It’s currently forecast to see 23C days for the rest of the week through to Sunday – in stark contrast to the UK, where multiple Met Office yellow weather warnings are in place for snow and ice.

Marrakesh is known for its wealth of cultural treasures, including art galleries, museums, and striking architecture.

It is also well known for being compact, and easy to explore on foot, with an array of souks (marketplaces), historic palaces and landmarks to enjoy.

According to travel firm, myqvi.com, it’s a city of contrasts with its “ancient medina and vibrant souks standing in sharp contrast to its modern buildings and elegant hotels.

“The city has become increasingly popular and desirable as a holiday destination for tourists worldwide – and for good reasons,” it adds.

“Visitors to Marrakesh can expect a sensory overload of sights, sounds, and smells as they absorb the city’s rich culture and history.

“Marrakech is an unmissable destination that offers a one-of-a-kind experience of the city’s vibrant energy, bustling nightlife, and authentic daily life shared by locals and tourists alike.”

Highlights include Jemma el Fnaa, the city’s ancient main square which is a UNESCO world heritage site filled with street performers and stalls selling delicious food.

Visitors also single out Rahba Kedima, also known as the “magic market”, for praise, where you can find an array of spices and local crafts.

Marrakesh has a rich history as a strategically important city of immense power and wealth, evidence of which remains to this day.

Here, you’ll find various lavish palaces, and mansions. Among the best known are El Badi Palace, Bahia Palaca, as well as the main Royal Palace which is one of the King of Morocco’s official residences.

Marrakesh is served by Ménara International Airport (RAK), which has a number of non-stop flights from UK airports each day.

These include Gatwick, Stansted, Birmingham, Manchester and Edinburgh airports.

Direct flights from London to RAK take around three hours and 40 minutes, as per Trip.com.
