Phnom Penh’s major new Morodok Tocho flyover is nearing completion, but traffic has already been radically reduced by its partial opening.
The major bridge, developed by Cambodian Overseas Investment Company (COIC), has cost £28m to construct and is designed to alleviate traffic congestion in the capital city.
Despite the high proliferation of motor scooters used in the east Asian city, traffic issues have been a thorn in the side of residents for some time.
In April 2024 ahead of the Khmer New Year, upper level ‘Phase 1’ of the project was temporarily opened as the traffic over this period is particularly busy.
On December 17, a cement pouring ceremony was held to mark the progress of ‘Phase 2’, which is the lower level of the flyover.
His Excellency Khuong Sreng, Governor of Phnom Penh Municipal Government, alongside Mr. Pung Khev Se, Chairman of the Board of Directors for COIC attended the event.
Completion of the project is expected in February 2025, ahead of the New Year celebrations from April 14 to 16.
The flyover is situated at the intersection of Samdech Techo Hun Sen Blvd, Monivong Blvd, and Street 271, in Phnom Penh’s Meanchey and Chamkar Mon districts. It is expected to revolutionise the traffic flow of the city.
Kim Pagna, country director for the Asia Injury Prevention (AIP) Foundation, told The Phnom Penh Post: “Having good infrastructure, such as flyovers, has greatly facilitated travel, but it’s also crucial for relevant authorities and ministries to enforce traffic law by correctly placing signs or traffic lights and ensuring safe traffic flow.
