Storm Darragh has bruised large parts of the UK today, leaving tens thousands of people without power.

Sports matches have had to be cancelled, as dangerous high winds batteredthe country.

The Met Office issued a lesser-seen red weather warning for most of Wales and areas of the west country, with a “danger to life” message sent to residents’ phones urging them to stay inside. Gusts of up to 93mph were measured in parts of Wales this morning.

The Energy Networks Association said 177,000 homes in England, Scotland and Wales are without power. A spokesperson said around 768,000 customers have been reconnected on Saturday, with more than 1,000 engineers ready to be deployed.

The brutal weather began at around 3am this morning, and the Met Office has now extended a number of weather warnings until 9am on Sunday.
