From opulent luxury to stunning mountain ranges, seven of the world’s most scenic rail journeys are a must-do for every rail enthusiast and traveller. They vary from basic to luxurious, but having all been featured on Lonely Planet’s list of amazing train journeys, they have one thing in common: breathtaking scenery.
5. The Rocky Mountaineer across Canada
The Rocky Mountaineer takes you across the Rockies in Canada from Vancouver to Banff. What sets this train apart is the glass observatory overhead, from which you can gaze in awe at the sights for 37 hours.
The most iconic route is arguably Banff to Vancouver, although travellers can choose to divert to rural Jasper, Alberta, for its sprawling national park.

4. The Darjeeling Toy Train in northern India
For tea lovers, the Darjeeling Toy Train makes for an unforgettable trip. The 55-mile journey is one of the shortest on the list, but the sights more than make up for it.
Departing from New Jalpaiguri in Bengal to Darjeeling, travellers get to witness lush green tea plantations and the Himilayas, including the Mount Khangchendzonga, the third-highest mountain in the world.
