There are seven countries around the world that will pay Brits to move there, one even offers £73,000. Relocation programmes are a way for countries to try and boost populations in rural areas or bring skilled workers back to a region.
Chile
Start-Up Chile, created by the Chilean government, is an accelerator program offering grants of between £10,426 and £59,578 to international startups
The program also aims to provide mentorship and resources to entrepreneurs, especially in tech. It comes with a year-long visa and a co-working space.
Italy
In Sicily, you can buy a home for 87p on the condition that you will refurbish it within three years at an estimated cost of £13,000 and provide a £4,350 security deposit refundable upon completion.
Sardinia offers £15,000 to those who move full-time to a rural area (towns with less than 3,000 residents) and renovate a home in an effort to combat depopulation and isolation.
Ireland
“Our Living Islands” is a 10-year policy to ensure sustainable communities on around 30 Irish islands. The initiative provides grants of up to £73,000 to renovate derelict properties on remote islands to boost populations.
Other programs focus on different needs, such as a relocation package of up to £4,094 for international healthcare workers, and the Start-Up Entrepreneur Programme (STEP) for those with an innovative business idea.
Switzerland
The town of Albinen offers £21,740 per adult and £8,690 per child to attract new residents under 45, provided they buy a house worth over £193,880 and live there for at least 10 years.
There is also an investment-based residence program for non-EU/EFTA nationals, specific cantonal tax and residence incentives.
Spain
Spain has two programmes to help reduce labour shortages and attract digital nomads. The town of Ponga offers £2,610 to young couples willing to stay for five years, plus an additional £2,610 for each child.
Extremadura applicants can receive grants of up to £8,690 for moving to the region and working remotely for at least two years. Additional payments of up to £4,350 are available if the remote work is maintained for a third year.
Greece
Antikythera offers families with three or more children a monthly stipend of £435, free accommodation, and free food to relocate. This island is seeking to boost its population with skilled workers and families.
Croatia
Legrad, in Croatia, sells homes for 10p to attract new residents. Applicants must be under 45, in a partnership, have a clean record, not own property, and commit to living in the town for 15 years. The town offers additional financial support for renovations.
