Saudi Arabia is carrying out a number of ambitious construction projects as part of its plans to become an economic powerhouse by 2030.

One venture is the development of the Jeddah Economic City, costing a reported $20billion (£15.7billion).

A huge 5.3 million square metres of land has been set aside on the coastal part of the city, looking out on to the Red Sea.

It will create a “new era in urban development and living”, the project’s leaders say.

The city will be home to residential areas, business spaces, commercial centres, and even diplomatic quarters.

The centre piece of the city will be the world’s tallest tower standing at 1,000 metres high.

Construction will be carried out by Saudi Binladen Group and the city will be designed by US firm Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture.

The tower is expected to cost £1billion to build.

A similar project 60 miles north of Jeddah will see the King Abdullah Economic City (KAEC) built by 2035, coating a huge £75billion.

Fahd al-Rasheed, Group CEO of Emaar Economic City, explained: “Putting that first phase together is the most difficult point.

“Once you figure it out, the sky is the limit, so we are in that phase now.”

The city will boast a number of great attractions, including hospitals, schools, golf courses, a port capable of handling 20million containers annually, an industrial complex, a financial island, and more.

Saudi Arabia also has plans to build the world’s biggest building – The Mukaab – in the capital Riyadh.

It will be 1,300ft high and 1,200ft wide, with enough space to house 20 Empire State Buildings.

The project is expected to cost a whopping £40billion.
