The 10 gentlest dog breeds — one is the ‘kindest of all canine companions’

With the Kennel Club noting a significant boom in dog ownership, which dog breeds are known for their calm temperament? There are an astonishing 221 pedigree breeds and countless crossbreeds in the world; choosing the right pup can be quite the challenge.

For those who have an active lifestyle, a larger breed may be ideal, while allergy sufferers will likely seek out a hypoallergenic pup. For households yearning for tranquillity, steering clear of high-energy breeds such as Border Collies and Springer Spaniels is advisable. Instead, here are the top 10 most serene dog breeds as per the American Kennel Club’s recommendations.

1. Bergamasco Sheepdog

Topping the list with its unique appearance, the Bergamasco Sheepdog earns praise from the American Kennel Club for being “bright, loyal, protective, and among the more calm dog breeds”. Plus, their eye-catching coat is deceptively easy to care for, making them a hassle-free addition to any family.

2. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

Next up is the affectionate Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, cherished for its amiable and soothing nature. These dogs are the epitome of a relaxed pet, perfect for both young and old, content to spend hours nestled on their owner’s lap.

3. Tibetan Spaniel

The Tibetan Spaniel boasts a soothing and gentle, yet playful, temperament. Don’t be deceived by their laid-back demeanour — they also prove to be formidable competitors in dog sports such as agility, rally and obedience.

4. French Bulldog

Currently, the French Bulldog is giving the Labrador Retriever a run for its money as the most popular dog breed in the UK. Their tranquil temperament makes them excellent companion dogs, and they relish making new acquaintances—both canine and human—at the park.

5. Irish Wolfhound

Often, larger dogs can be the calmest companions, with the Irish Wolfhound being a prime example. This breed is highly intelligent, relaxed, and sensitive to human emotions.

6. Clumber Spaniel

Equally content as companion or hunting dogs, the American Kennel Club describes the Clumber Spaniel as “esteemed housemates”. They are dependable, considerate, affectionate and serene in nature.

7. Pekingese

While the petite Pekingese doesn’t always get along well with children, according to the American Kennel Club, once you have earned their respect, they are “one of the calmest, affectionate, and kindest of all canine companions”. They are also an extremely outgoing and friendly breed.

8. Boerboel

The Boerboel breed of dog is loyal, intelligent and calm, particularly around children. However, they are not suitable for first-time dog owners as they can be challenging to train.

9. Saint Bernard

Renowned for their gentle nature, the colossal Saint Bernard is as tranquil as it is large. They are especially wonderful with children, earning them the nickname ‘nanny’ dogs.

10. Basset Hound

The Basset Hound is celebrated for its ability to track scents without losing focus, maintaining a calm demeanour throughout. This tranquillity extends to all aspects of their character. They form deep bonds with their owners, though training them may require a touch of patience.
