The 1 popular dog breed ranked ‘least expensive’ to own in lifetime costs

Owning a dog is a wonderful experience but it can often be a costly commitment, especially when expenses add up over a pet’s lifetime. Tom Sadler, managing director at Pet Insurance Deals, says “the financial aspect of pet ownership often surprises new dog owners who haven’t factored in the long-term costs beyond the initial purchase”.

He continued: “While cost shouldn’t be the only consideration, understanding the long-term financial commitment can help prevent heartbreaking situations where owners must surrender pets they can no longer afford to care for properly.”

Luckily for first-time owners, a recent study has been released that has ranked the most budget-friendly pooches, with number one being an old popular breed to own in the UK.

Winner: The English Toy Spaniel

After analysing 173 dog breeds based on their initial purchase cost, insurance, food, and grooming expenses throughout their expected lifespan, the English Toy Spaniel was ranked the most inexpensive, with a total lifetime cost of just £5,163.83.

According to the study, this breed’s life expectancy is 11 years and only costs £39.12 a month to care for, thanks to its size and limited grooming needs. Tom shared: “Smaller breeds typically live longer than larger dogs, but their reduced food intake and generally lower grooming costs make them significantly more affordable over time.

“For example, a Chihuahua might cost just £33 per month over its 15-year lifespan, making these breeds particularly suitable for budget-conscious pet lovers.”

For those assuming this price is still hefty, it depends on the context. The most expensive breed is reportedly the Romanian Mioritic Shepherd, which costs £16,252.53 across its lifetime. This breaks down to approximately £104.18 per month over 13 years.

Below we have listed the top ten least expensive dog breeds and the most expensive for you to explore.
