The £0 ‘totally easy’ technique to stop damp and mould ruining your ho

Mould is an absolute nightmare and, while it sometimes feels like it’s impossible to keep on top of, there are easy and free techniques that are always worth a try.

Mould and damp are often caused by condensation, which occurs when cold surfaces, such as walls, come into contact with cool, humid air.

In the winter, condensation gets worse as the heating is on and the windows are closed. This then can turn into mould in the less ventilated areas of your home.

Almost sixty percent of privately leased homes have mould and moisture problems, which can be expensive to fix and, more significantly, harmful to a person’s health.

But there’s one thing you should always do which doesn’t require spending dozens of pounds on a dehumidifier.

And that is going over wet surfaces with a microfibre cloth, Lindsey Davis wrote for IdealHome.

This will prevent the mould growing in the most intricate and unnoticeable spaces.

She pointed out another free tip which is opening your windows first thing in the morning. Doing this for 10 minutes every day will make a huge impact on preventing the onset of mould as it allows moisture to escape

Experts will advise you to do this every day in the winter, but Lindsey explains that you’ll see better results if you keep this up regardless of the season.

Experts have also previously shared a cheap way of removing mould from walls. Natural cleaning solutions like borax is the best option for removing mould from walls without damaging the paintwork, Hiatt Hardware said.

“The antifungal properties of borax make it an excellent natural cleaner,” they said. “Mix one cup of borax powder with four litres of water and brush the solution into the affected areas, taking care not to spread it elsewhere. When finished, wipe up the borax solution and let it completely dry.”

A box of three borax can be purchased from Robert Dyas for £2.99 or from Amazon for £6.53.
