A speedboat carrying 36 people and crew erupted in flames near Maiton Island, off Phuket, a city in Thailand loved by holidaymakers. Horrifying images show flames engulfing the vessel and thick black smoke rising from it, visible from miles.
The tourists aboard the speedboat, which was some 60 yards offshore, were able to jump into the water. Initial reports said six people among those on board, which included holidaymakers mainly from Russia and Kazakhstan, suffered injuries. Among the casualties, three were tourists, it is claimed. The captain, a guide and the boat’s mechanic were also injured, according to the report.
The cause of the fire hasn’t yet been confirmed by officials. One report alleged that the speedboat had made a swimming stop when the engine exploded and ignited.
It said: “The fire was caused by an engine malfunction. While rescue services were getting to the site, the boat washed up on the shore, where it completely burned out.”
The Phuket Information Centre said: “The fire spread rapidly. There were 36 crew members and tourists on board.
“Everyone was able to get off the boat in time. However, there were minor injuries from the incident.”
Following the horror blast, emergency services were scrambled to help the tourists and crewmembers.
The Marine Tourist Rescue Centre sent help, as did the Thai Maritime Enforcement Command Centre and the Royal Thai Navy, which dispatched the HTMS Hua Hin to assist in the operation.
Maiton Island, also known as Koh Mai Thon, is a small, private island off Phuket’s coast in the Andaman Sea.
It is famed for crystal-clear waters, coral reefs, and soft sandy beaches.
