An 18-year-old Texas mom dumped her infant on a stranger at a bus stop and fled in an Uber because she didn’t want the baby, police said.
Accused callous mom Karla Ibarra was with her son at a bus stop in downtown San Antonio last Sunday when she approached Jennifer Benavides and asked to borrow her phone, KSAT 12 reported.
Benavides was gushing over how cute Ibarra’s 1-month-old boy was when the teen suddenly started handing over all her son’s federal ID documents and asking the startled woman to take him from her.
“She’s like, ‘Well, do you want him? I’m going to give him away. I’m going to give him to somebody,’ ” Benavides recalled.
“She begins handing me his birth certificate, his Medicaid, his Social Security card,” she said.
Benavides was shocked and brought Ibarra and the infant to a friend who lived nearby who might help, but the teen mom then left the house in an Uber without her son.
The two women then fed the boy and changed his diaper before calling San Antonio police for help.
Ibarra was arrested when she returned to the area later, with the child put in the care of relatives, KSAT reported.
The 18-year-old was allegedly determined to leave the boy with a stranger because she no longer wanted him, according to the San Antonio Police Department.
“It’s upsetting to know that even with all the resources that we have out there that someone would do this,” Benavides said of the situation, thankful that she was able to help the child before he was given away to someone dangerous.
Texas has a Safe Haven Law, a k a the Baby Moses Law, which allows parents to anonymously leave their newborns at designated safe locations without legal repercussions.
Ibarra was charged with abandoning and endangering a child with intent to return, according to Bexar County Court. Her bail was set at $7,000.
