Jannik Sinner will return to action today when he takes on Mariano Navone at the Italian Open. The 23-year-old hasn’t featured in a competitive match since winning the Australian Open in January after being handed a ban for doping offences.
Sinner was suspended from tennis in February after low levels of clostebol – a banned substance – were found in his system last year. He maintained the substance was present due to contamination after his physio had applied cream to a cut on his own finger before treating the player. And the Italian star reached an agreement with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) to miss three months of action.
Sinner will be the heavy favourite to defeat Navone after clinching the third Grand Slam trophy of his career at the Australian Open. His first match back has been eagerly anticipated throughout tennis and will get underway at 6pm BST.
Elsewhere, British star Jack Draper secured his place in the round of 32 after dispatching Luciano Darderi 6-1, 6-4 yesterday. And Emma Raducanu thrashed Jil Teichmann 6-2, 6-2 in her opening match.
