Fox News took a break from its regular Tuesday programming to announce that Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce has popped the question to Taylor Swift.
The news was revealed during an ‘America Reports’ segment with John Roberts and Sandra Smith on 26 August, while they were discussing President Donald Trump’s plans for National Guard deployment.
In the middle of the broadcast, John interrupted the conversation to share, “We have some breaking news. How about this one Sandra? It appears that Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce are now engaged to be married.”
Fans reacted Swiftly
Viewers were taken aback that the conservative-leaning news programme paused their coverage of Trump to celebrate the pop star, who is known to have an ongoing dispute with the president.
On X, a fan of Swift wrote, “Taylor Swift is now the #1 news item and Trump can’t compete with her news.”
Another chimed in, “Thank you Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift (congratulations)! For momentarily pushing Trump out of today’s news! I’ve had enough of him and his lies!”
“Trump is going to be fuming when he sees Taylor Swift’s engagement announcement,” a third speculated.
How did Trump respond?
However, the president managed to put his personal feelings towards the singer aside for a moment to offer his congratulations.
When asked about the engagement news during a press briefing, he initially joked, “Well, I wish him a lot of luck.”
He then added: “Nah, I think it’s – I think he’s a great player, I think he’s a great guy, and I think that she’s a terrific person. So, I wish them a lot of luck.”
How did the love begin?
The love story between Taylor and Travis ignited two years ago when the football star mentioned the pop singer on his New Heights podcast.
In a July 2023 episode, the NFL player admitted he attempted to make a move while attending her famous Eras Tour.
A couple of months later, rumours started swirling that the two had begun spending time together. They’ve been linked ever since.
The couple didn’t officially confirm until this past summer when Travis posted a 13-photo carousel on Instagram featuring several pictures of the pair beaming from ear-to-ear.
He captioned the post, “Had some adventures this offseason, kept it,” followed by a 100 emoji.
