‘Surprisingly good’ mystery thriller with ‘unexpected twist’ streaming on Prime

Amazon Prime Video has just added an overlooked mystery thriller that some fans have called “surprisingly good”. A slew of titles get added to Amazon Prime every week for UK subscribers, from Hollywood blockbusters to classic war movies to highly-rated drama series. One of the streaming service’s latest additions is a mystery thriller that some were surprised to enjoy, describing the “unexpected twist” that is a staple of any decent mystery flick.

Among the new titles on Amazon Prime Video this week is Strange But True, a thriller released in 2019. The film flew largely under the radar when it was first released, even though it features a slew of familiar faces, including Nick Robinson, Margaret Qualley, Greg Kinnear, and Brian Cox. The film has mixed reviews, but some fans have praised the storyline for its twists. The film is an adaptation of the 2004 novel of the same name by John Searles, which was met with rave reviews by readers.

The story follows Melissa, who meets the mother of her ex-boyfriend, Ronnie, who died in a car crash five years ago. In a strange twist of fate, she informs Ronnie’s mother that she might be pregnant with his child, even though he has been dead for half a decade.

On Rotten Tomatoes, it has a critic’s score of 54%, which isn’t considered a very high score compared to other films rated on the site. However, it has a much higher audience score of 83%, meaning it was quite a hit with casual viewers.

One reviewer said of the flick: “This is an unusual film, but in a surprisingly good way. The performances were all commendable (not spectacular), but what makes this movie pop is the hard twist that I did not expect or catch on to until a few scenes after that fact – the first act lulled me in pace and plot that when it pivoted, it took me a second to see the real arc of the story.”

Another shared: “Rather slow until about 2/3 of the way through, when I was caught off guard by an unexpected twist. Good cast.”

However, not everyone was convinced. One brutal review reads: “This was the worst storyline I have ever heard. Literally trying way too hard throughout to keep you guessing, but fails miserably. The plot twists are so predictable, and all in all, it ended in a very strange way.”

A second bad review reads: “I really did not get the point. There was no real storyline. It made no sense.”
