Supermarket staple is the 'best' method for whitening grey clothes – and it isn't bleach

Opening the washing machine only to find your white laundry items have turned grey is fairly common.

It’s usually because white fabrics are coated in optical brighteners which then wash off over time leaving clothes looking grey.

With this in mind, fans of cleaning sensation Mrs Hinch, whose full name is Sophie Hinchliffe, have shared their simple solution for whitening discoloured white clothes.

The cleaning and lifestyle influencer has more than 4.8 million followers on Instagram and often shares her garden and home tips online.

Fans of hers have taken to social media in recent years to share their own hacks for solving common household problems.

Facebook user Michelle Austen asked: “I’ve got a couple of old white t-shirts that over time have turned that nasty grey colour.

“I’ve soaked in buckets of Napisan but I haven’t been able to turn them white again! Any pointers please?”

The post was inundated with comments but the most suggested option was to use Vanish.

Tracey Hollins said: “Bleach breaks down the fabric, so they won’t last long at all and do go yellow. Vanish is best.”

Hilda Campbell Reid agreed and said: “Put in a bucket with warm water [and] white vanish powder tub.”

Sandra Balchin commented: “I wash a load of towels first wash then I do my whites. They stay white white for much longer.

“I don’t know why, maybe to do with water in the machine, not dirty just grey from a dark load.”

Trish Gibson posted: “Bleach leave for half hour will bring them white wash as normal.”
