Succession star 'in talks' to play Mark Zuckerberg in Social Network sequel

David Fincher’s 2010 biopic The Social Network traced the origins of Facebook, with Jesse Eisenberg playing Harvard sophomore-turned-tech CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

The film scooped three Oscars in 2011 out of an impressive eight nominations, and catapulted its relatively young cast into the limelight.

Among those who starred in the film were Dakota Johnson, Armie Hammer and Andrew Garfield, with pop star Justin Timberlake even stepping into the shoes of Napster founder Sean Parker.

A sequel, The Social Network Part II, is currently being crafted by Aaron Sorkin and is set to pick up years after the original ended. It is anticipated to delve into the story behind a series of articles published by The Wall Street Journal which probed a darker side of the social media platform.

However, it remains uncertain who will step into the role of Zuckerberg, as according to The Hollywood Reporter, Eisenberg has no intention of reprising his role.

While some speculate that his refusal could be a bargaining ploy, there are reports that another big name is being considered for the role.

Deadline suggests that Succession star Jeremy Strong could take on the role of the Facebook founder and META CEO, indicating that he is currently the favourite, reports the Mirror.

Anora star Mikey Madison and The Bear’s breakout actor Jeremy Allen White may also join the cast, although no official announcements have been made yet. The duo could potentially portray two Facebook whistle-blowers.

Whilst enthusiasts anxiously anticipate further sequel developments, The Social Network remains accessible for streaming on Netflix.

The picture holds an outstanding 96 per cent critics’ rating on Rotten Tomatoes, alongside a robust 87 per cent audience approval.

One captivated viewer hailed it as Fincher’s “magnum opus”, writing: “With an engaging dialogue-driven script from Aaron Sorkin, Facebook drama ‘The Social Network’ is still as relevant as ever just over 10 years from it’s release given that we are truly in the age of the internet with the enormous power of social media and tech giants holding market power.”

Another admirer of the production raved: “Amazing movie, beautifully shot by David Fincher. Aaron Sorkin proves again that he is one of todays best writers. This movie contains some of the most complex characters ever put to screen.”

A release date is yet to be announced for The Social Network Part II. Netflix subscribers can currently stream The Social Network (2010) on the platform.
