Sturgill Simpson Johnny Blue Skies and the Dark Clouds are boogie-ing once again.
The alt-country group — which, if it wasn’t clear, is fronted by Simpson’s alter ego Johnny Blue Skies — just announced they’re striking out on their ‘Mutiny For The Masses Tour’ in support of the group’s recently-released album “Mutiny After Midnight.”
Starting in early September, the five-piece band will play arenas all over North America.
Late in the nationwide run, they’re slated to make Northeast stops at at Philadelphia’s Xfinity Mobile Arena on Thursday, Oct. 15 and Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on Friday, Oct. 16.
Adding to the mysterious nature of the outing, “Mutiny After Midnight” is not available on most major streaming platforms like Spotify or YouTube. Therefore, the only way fans can hear the gloriously ramshackle record — which debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 — is by purchasing digitally on Apple Music or physically via Amazon.
While that’s a bit of a hindrance, the album is worth going the extra mile for.
“Combining country-rock with funk, hard disco, and Golden Age of Porn soundtracks, ‘Mutiny After Midnight’ marches onto the streets and into the sheets…this erotic vision of national unity is more than simply titillating,” Pitchfork writes in a review.
Critics were just as emphatic when Blue Skies and the Dark Clouds last played live in 2024-25 as part of their ‘Who the F*** Is Johnny Blue Skies? Tour.”
“Playing to a sold-out crowd of 13,000 fans, Simpson held nothing back as he tore through an incredible 32-song set over three and a half hours,” Americana Highways raved about an October ’24 concert in Georgia. “…the music was loud, gritty, and unapologetically real, with each song feeling both immediate and timeless.”

Johnny Blue Skies new music
On March 13, Johnny Blue Skies and the Dark Clouds released their second studio album “Mutiny After Midnight.”
The slinky record sounds like a relic from the past; in fact, this humble reviewer wouldn’t be surprised if this was originally recorded in the Ozarks in 1977.
Saxy, soulful and defiantly fun, “Mutiny After Midnight” just may be the best undiscovered, bar-room garage band around.
This is evidenced by the groovy opening title track “Make America F– Again,” which might make The Marshall Tucker Band blush. Obscene, blisteringly honest and perfect to boot-scoot along to.
Other highlights on the rockin’ offering include the attitude-heavy anthem “Excited Delirium,” plaintive honky-tonk ballad “Don’t Let Go,” sunshine-y, jittery bop “Stay On That,” fuzzed-out, rump shaker “Situation” and urgent epic “Everyone Is Welcome.”
Best of all though might be the straight-faced cover of Eddie Murphy’s classic “Party All The Time.” What a delight.
Truth be told, there isn’t a dude in the bunch. Even if you’re a fair-weather fan, this album is more than worthy of a spin or three.
