This period drama is so popular with viewers it has a near-perfect review score on Rotten Tomatoes and was nominated across multiple categories at the Emmy Awards.
Fans of the TV show Bridgerton cannot shut up about its successor, Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, the larger-than-life follow-up show that has rocked their worlds since its release in 2023. While it’s a fictional take on the historic time period, the story is loosely based on the rise of Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, who took to the throne during the late 19th century.
Very much like Bridgerton, viewers can expect to see costumes and design galore, with each episode full of vibrancy and, of course, drama. In fact, this series was nominated at the Primetime Emmy Awards for its costume design, make-up and hairstyle, and the much-loved Julie Andrews was nominated for her voice-over in the show.
A happy viewer left a review to say:”Love, love, LOVED. Cried, laughed, and felt the romance. Best season of the Bridgerton universe thus far. Thank you, Shonda!” While someone else added: “Amazing, incredible, show-stopping, beautiful. A must-see, definitely.”
After audience members got to know Queen Charlotte throughout Bridgerton, there were many lingering questions about her past. The character is a fearless leader, but her soft spot is her husband, King George III, who has mental health struggles. The original Netflix show didn’t get to grips with the story of how he came to be this way or how she came to power, but finally, this spin-off reveals all.
Queen Charlotte was an immediate success with TV lovers, and in the first week of its release, it debuted at number one across an impressive 91 countries. At the heart of the show are the two actresses, Adjoa Andoh, who can be seen playing Lady Danbury, and India Amarteifio, who is the fresh-faced younger version of the queen.
For many, the show was a refreshing take on period dramas, with Black women at the forefront of the story. A review reads: “It is inspiring how Queen Charlotte depicts a fearless woman, mother and queen. There is so much heart to the story. This is my 5th time watching this series, and I just love it.”
Another review claimed: “I liked this spin-off better than the main show.” India Amarteifio is so good. Would love to see her as the lead in a TV adaptation of the Ending Fire trilogy; she is everything you want in a heroine!”
Of course viewers can’t help but compare it to Bridgerton, and it’s a tough comparison to have with the way the original show has taken off. Although many are in agreement that Queen Charlotte may even be the better of the two, and that’s saying a lot.
A viewer shared, “Wonderful – I laughed and cried. The best of the Bridgerton series by far.”
While someone else added: “Better than seasons 1 and 2 of the main show.”
If you’re ready to sink your teeth into a whole new side of the 19th-century glitz and glamour of the royals, then Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story is available to watch on Netflix now.
