The sweltering summer months traditionally prompt Brits to fly away in search of warmer continental weather and the many beaches across Europe.
With Europe’s top beaches being a massive draw, the idea of soaking up the sun on foreign sands is tempting for many.
However, with Britain’s summers heating up and the cost-of-living crisis biting hard, many are opting for staycations, discovering the UK’s own multitude of stunning coastal spots.
However, amidst the UK’s popular seaside towns, Portstewart Strand has been given the title of the UK’s best beach, defeating anticipated others such as North Norfolk’s Holkham Beach or Sussex’s bustling Brighton Beach.
This Northern Ireland beauty spot in CoDerry is not only enjoying fame for gracing screens in Game of Thrones but also for its pristine waters that have charmed an increasing number of visitors.
Chris Haslam, the renowned travel writer, extolled the virtues of Portstewart Strand for its picturesque charms, family-friendly atmosphere, inclusivity for dogs, and the unique perk of beachside car parking.
He said: “The promenade is still delightful, beginning at the harbour, opposite the café/deli Born and Bread, and passing between the rocky shore and a busy strip of seafront shops. Yes, you’ll find a chippy, Sheila’s souvenir shop and two ice cream parlours.”
The secret to this seaside resort might well be its bustling high street that thrives all year round, not just during holiday season. Even travel writers are singing praises of the beach, and it’s a hit on TripAdvisor too.
Last month, Caroline shared her experience online, she said: “Superb beach. Reminded me of Cape Cod but we did go on a glorious day.
“Deeply impressed with the young gentleman who works for the National Trust checking that those using disabled bays were indeed showing blue badges.”
Another added: “I’ve been going to the north coast for years, but had never set foot on Portstewart Strand until today. Miles of sand, plenty of on-beach parking, great walk, excellent paddling, lots of opportunities for surfing and SUP boarding.”
