Britain is set to be battered by strong winds and a wall of rain on Sunday as bad weather continues to afflict the country. New weather data from WXCharts.com shows a mammoth wall of rain descending on the UK from the Atlantic Ocean on the morning of Sunday 14 September.
The rain will be accompanied by strong winds which could reach 70mph in some parts of the UK. Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist Stephen Kocher said: “Strong west or southwesterly winds will arrive across coastal areas of southwest England and Wales during Sunday evening, spreading inland and eastwards during Monday morning. Gusts of 45-55 mph are expected widely in inland areas, while gusts of 60-70 mph are possible at times along exposed coasts and hills.”
The new maps show much of the country covered in rain through Sunday morning, continuing a miserable weekend of weather.
Central parts of England are likely to be hit hardest, with Manchester and Birmingham both seeing bright red spots over them on weather data, indicating that as much as 10-15mm could fall every hour.
Elsewhere, Scotland is likely to see heavy rainfall spreading as far south as Newcastle, with very few parts of the country likely to avoid significant downfalls.
A Met Office forecast for Sunday said: “A fine start for many but with rain then spreading northeastwards, heavy at times. Turning increasingly windy with gales developing widely across England and Wales into the evening.”
The high winds have led to the Met Office issuing a yellow weather warning, due to commence from 8pm tomorrow evening, lasting until 6pm on Monday.
They warn that “strong and gusty winds are likely to cause some disruption to travel and interruptions to power.”
They added: “Most of England and all of Wales will be affected by strong winds from Sunday evening through to late afternoon on Monday. A yellow weather warning is in place.”
The poor weather is set to continue into next week, with the Met Office warning of an “unsettled theme.”
A Met Office warning for Monday to Wednesday said: “Staying windy for many on Monday with sunny spells and blustery showers, possibly heavy and thundery. Showers and winds gradually easing on Tuesday but turning unsettled again on Wednesday.”
