Storm Floris: UK households urged not to throw away broken items | UK | News

As the Met Office places parts of the UK under an amber weather warning for storm Floris, Brits have been urged to not throw away any items damaged by the weather. With “danger to life” warnings issued in Scotland, and “do not travel” alerts active across the Northern UK, Gareth Rondel, head of sustainability delivery at Barratt and David Wilson Homes, has detailed advice for battling the downpours.

The Met Office has issued amber warnings for much of Scotland, from 10am to 11pm on Monday, August 4. A yellow warning for wind had already been issued for northern parts of the UK from 6am on the same day to 6am on Tuesday. “Unfortunately, climate change is going to lead to more extreme weather, including heatwaves and storms. This is why it helps to be prepared for a storm when it comes to preventing damage to your property,” Mr Rondel said.

“Take steps to minimise any damage prior to, during, and after the stormy weather, but only do so safely.

“If your property is damaged, contact your home insurance provider as soon as possible. They will offer help and advice about what to do next.”

However, the expert is urging Brits to keep any items impacted by the storm. “Never throw away any items that have been damaged in the process of the storm as you might need to provide them as evidence when making a claim,” he said. “And, where possible, contact your insurance provider before carrying out any emergency repairs. Take pictures of everything and keep all receipts and invoices.”

Mr Rondel also shared numerous ways to prepare for a storm, including checking your gutters as forgotten and dirt and other debris can quickly build up.

Blocked gutters can result in heavy rain causing leaks and interior wall damage, the expert added. It is also advised to check your roof and skylights as they are the most common areas for storm damage.

The expert says to repair any cracks or loose tiles ahead of the storm, to prevent further costly repairs and emergency callout fees.

Mr Rondel also recommends moving cars to avoid falling trees and debris, as well as securing any outdoor furniture.
