Experts have suggested an alternative to roasting potatoes that gives them a richer texture. This makes for a delicious and fluffy side dish that will be a real treat on your dinner plate. There are almost endless ways to cook potatoes, from making them extra crispy in the air fryer to shallow frying them in a pan or skillet or deep-fat frying them. However, there is one method that you might not have tried before.

Potatoes are a delicious side dish in many British meals, such as a classic Sunday Roast. In most British households, you will likely find a bag of spuds that are used regularly. Households have their favourite ways to enjoy potatoes, but one underrated method to make them delicious is steaming them. You might not have even realised you could steam potatoes, but it turns out the results are excellent.

Alex and Sonja Overhiser, a couple who have written two cookbooks, have shared the simple way to steam your potatoes, which is a diverse addition to any dish. “This recipe is ideal with new potatoes or baby potatoes, due to their rich, buttery texture,” they revealed.

“Throw them together with butter, garlic, and parsley, and you’ve got a quick side dish that everyone will go crazy for.” But what exactly are steamed potatoes? Well, steamed potatoes are cooked by the indirect heat of the steam, becoming tender after some time.

To make their steamed potatoes, this couple uses potatoes, garlic, butter and parsley. To start, simply add an inch of water and a large pinch of salt to a large pot before adding the steamer basket on top as the water boil.

Then, reduce the heat slightly after the water has started boiling, add your potatoes to the basket and cover the pot. The time they take to cook all the waythrough depends on their size, but it will typically takes between 10 and 15 minutes.

You can regularly check how well-cooked they are by piercing the potatoes with a fork. You will know when they are done when you pierce them with a fork and they feel tender.

Once you achieve that, you can add the potatoes to a bowl with minced garlic, butter and parsley and toss them until they are fully coated. You can add any kind of spice or herb into the bowl here, depending on your preferences.
