A travel lover insists that this beautiful spot in Italy is a must for your next holiday abroad.
It’s that time of year when European hotspots start getting warmer and filled with sunshine, which might be enticing you to get away from your daily commitments at home and take a trip abroad. While holidays can be very expensive, you can get some pretty good deals at this time of year.
Avoiding the most popular spots can help cut costs – and you may find hidden gems that are off the beaten track. Plus, this means that you can avoid busy areas and enjoy some peace.
Hayley Hunter, who loves sharing her travel experiences and best recommendations online, loves visiting Italy. And she believes she has found an “insanely beautiful” spot that you should visit over popular tourist spots.
Hayley said: “The Amalfi Coast is beautiful and all but have you heard of Tropea?” Legend has it that this pretty clifftop town, in Calabria, was founded by Hercules. The beautiful spot is home to an historic town, breathtaking beaches, boat tours and indulgent local cuisine spots.
Hayley said: “Wow. This place is insanely beautiful!! It’s only a six hour train from Rome and is cheaper and more quiet than the Amalfi or Cinque Terre.”
The rocky town towers above white sands and turquoise waters. You could simply spend your time chilling on the beach, swimming in the sea, or enjoying water sports, while there are also plenty of colourful fish to spot, so snorkelling is a perfect activity to do in this Italian town.
But the best way to explore the town is by foot; you can enjoy its winding, charming streets filled with hidden gems. The old town is home to a 12th century cathedral and many other historical buildings.
Red onions are specially grown in the coastal region of Calabria, especially around Tropea, so you may spot them being sold in a lot of shops. You are also likely to see red chillies adorning the shops, a food Calabria is famous for.
One person who has visited Tropea commented on Hayley’s video: “Yes! Tropea is over the top gorgeous. Nice village. Quiet countryside, too.” Another agreed, and wrote: “Everything about Tropea is like a dream, every corner of it is beautiful. And things aren’t crazy expensive.”
“Tropea will always be my fave place,” said another. “Tropea is my favourite place in Italy,” shared another.
“Tropea is just amazing,” commented another fan. Another who cannot recommend the spot enough wrote: “Went with my two sisters a few years ago and it was a holiday we’ll never forget! And soooo cheap at that time too! The sunsets from the hills were just chefs kiss.”
“It’s so beautiful, we had our 25th wedding anniversary in Tropea,” added another. One other said: “My husband and I honeymooned there in 2004! We loved it!”
According to Skyscanner, the current cheapest time to visit Tropea is May, with flights priced between £31 and £45. There are two nearby airports: Lamezia Terme Airport and Reggio Calabria Airport.
Ryanair, Malta Air and TUI all offer direct flights to Lamezia Terme Airport from the UK, with Brits able to fly from London Stansted, London Gatwick and Manchester.
