With the weather warming up, Brits are more likely to leave their doors and windows open to try to cool their homes down. But this summer habit does more than just lower the temperature – it also invites flies and other bugs into the house.

If you want to banish flies from your home, the experts at Express Bi-Folding Doors have shared their best tips for getting rid of the pesky insects. They’re cheap, easy, and some will even make your home smell lovely. The first tip is not to throw away the peels from your oranges or citrus fruits. Instead, place leftover peels in little pots around your doorways and windowsills.

Flies don’t like the smell of citrus fruits, so this will deter them from entering your home. Plus, oranges can be picked up for as little as 28p in supermarkets, making this a super cheap hack to banish bugs.

If oranges aren’t your thing, flies also don’t like the smell of cloves.

Cut lemons in half and place a few cloves in the flesh of the lemon, then put these on any windowsills or near doors. The two scents will work together to prevent flies from coming in, but will also add a nice fresh scent to your home.

For those who’d rather not have fruit peels around their homes, essential oils will work just as well – flies hate the smell of strong oils like peppermint, lemongrass and eucalyptus. For this hack, simply cut up some strips of kitchen paper or cloth, and place a little bit of your chosen essential oil on them. Lastly, hang these strips around your windows and doors to prevent flies from entering your home.

Other methods, like growing lavender or catnip in or near your home, can help discourage flies.

If you don’t have the space to grow flowers, then you can try growing strong smelling herbs like basil, as these also work well in deterring flies.
