It’s always handy to have a couple of tins of tuna in the cupboard at home. It’s the perfect high-protein lunch, and doesn’t require many more ingredients to make it into a proper meal.

For most of us, the default way to prepare tinned tuna is to drain it, mix with mayo, add seasonings and serve. However, one recipe recently posted online completely changes things, yet promises to be the ‘yummiest’ way to enjoy tuna. The technique was shared on Instagram by the Cornish Sea Salt Company and involves doing one very unusual thing with your drained tuna – frying it.

Frying your tinned tuna might sound bizarre, but it makes it much more interesting compared to simply adding mayo and calling it a day. Rather than making it soggy, frying the tuna makes it crispy and delicious, and it can then be served on top of jacket potatoes, rice, or even just a slice of toast.

In this recipe, the crispy fried tuna is served on a bed of delicious spicy rice, and you could also add some avocado slices for a sushi-like dish. Fans in the comments have been full of praise for this inventive recipe, with one saying: “Oooh never thought to fry tuna but I’m gonna give it a go now!”

Another wrote: “I’ve never heard or seen anyone fry tinned tuna. I’m intrigued now…”

And a third commented: “Kinda want fried rice with crispy tuna now…”

Here’s everything you need to make this recipe.

Take your tin of tuna and drain it ‘really well’ by partially removing the lid then squeezing it into the tin, so you get rid of the water or oil. Try to get as much of the liquid out as you can.

This will allow it to crisp up in the pan so much easier. Then, to a small saucepan, add a drizzle of olive oil and set it over a medum heat.

Flake up the tuna and tip it into the pan, moving it around with a spoon so that it gets nice, crispy and caramelised, which makes it so much tastier. This should only take around five to seven minutes. Meanwhile, cook your rice – you can use a microwaveable pack if you’re short on time.

When the rice is ready, add the mayo, lemon juice and seasoning and give it a good mix. Put into a bowl and sprinkle the crispy tuna on top.

Add the spring onion and the chilli crisp on top, and enjoy.
