Steven Gerrard is poised to make a rare extended media appearance amid strong links with the vacant managerial position at Rangers. The former Liverpool skipper has largely maintained a low profile in the UK since taking up the reins at Al-Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia in 2023. While he’s made sporadic appearances as a pundit, he’s kept his cards close to his chest regarding his future.
Not since April has he discussed a potential return to management, when he downplayed the likelihood of an immediate comeback. Over the summer, it was understood that Gerrard was seriously considered for a return to Rangers, but his family, comfortably settled in Bahrain, were not keen on returning to the UK at that point.
However, with Russell Martin vacating the managerial hotseat, Gerrard is set to give a rare interview on Rio Ferdinand’s ‘Rio Meets’ podcast – where his future is almost certain to be a topic of discussion.
The episode will air at 4pm UK time on Tuesday, October 7 on the Manchester United legend’s YouTube channel.
Recent interviews with Wayne Rooney and Michael Owen have lasted more than an hour, so it promises to be the most comprehensive interview Gerrard has given since April when he appeared on That Peter Crouch Podcast.
When Ferdinand tweeted a promotion for the show, coincidentally the day after the Rangers job became available, the responses were flooded with Ibrox fans urging him to ask about a potential return to the club.
Whether or not he’ll directly address the Rangers speculation remains to be seen.
Gerrard’s most recent candid remarks about his future emerged on Peter Crouch’s podcast back in April, when he insisted he had no pressing desire to return to management. However, five months down the line, his stance may well have shifted.
He revealed at the time: “I don’t want to be back in work, not at the moment. I’ve just come out, so I am happy waking up, being free, doing the family stuff and being free from the stress.
“I will go back in at some point but when it is round the clock for 18 months, I just want to be free and do normal things that you can’t do when you are coaching like a game of golf or go down the boozer.
“I want to do normal things that you can’t really do when you’re coaching, so I am all good. I’m good and stress free. I’m out of work in terms of the coaching and management, which is obviously 24/7.”
