Rangers are once again on the lookout for a new manager, with Steven Gerrard’s name already being mentioned as a potential candidate. After a dismal start to the season, Rangers find themselves languishing in eighth, 11 points behind early-season pacesetters, Hearts.
After a run of one win from their opening seven league matches, the Scottish side pulled the plug on head coach Russell Martin on Sunday night, leaving the manager’s seat vacant once more. Their performances in Europe weren’t much better, and while the board were said to be reluctant about sacking him, his position became untenable.
Even though Martin was only appointed in the summer, fans had been seen with banners calling for his exit, and a group of supporters were seen waiting for him outside the stadium after Sunday’s draw with Falkirk. But what are the chances of Gerrard, who won the league with Rangers in 2021, making a return to Ibrox as Martin’s replacement?
The noise coming out of Scotland is that Gerrard is certainly in the frame to take over from Martin, with Rangers reportedly ‘considering’ a move for the ex-Liverpool captain, as per The Guardian. However, the club haven’t made a move yet, and are also admirers of Danny Rohl and Sean Dyche as well.
Gerrard, meanwhile, is rumoured to be interested in a return to the 55-time champions, after a dismal run of jobs since leaving Rangers in 2022. The former midfielder managed just 11 months in charge of Aston Villa before getting the sack, whereas his stint with Saudi Arabian outfit Al-Ettifaq lasted fewer than 18 months.
Gerrard has already held talks with the Rangers board over the summer, but turned down the chance of a return because of family reasons. However, following the sacking of Martin, former Scotland international Pat Nevin believes the job could tempt Gerrard this time around.
Speaking to betideas.com, he explained: “I think Rangers would be quite tempting for Gerrard because remember he’s the last one that won a league title. Celtic have had so many in a row. So you’ve got to look at Gerrard, he knew how to do that job for a period of time.
“There is a big but. Where are you taking Rangers from, particularly right now? Even just a look at the league table. It’s a big old ask. It’s a huge ask just now. So it’s whether he likes what he sees when he looks at that, would he be tempted by that?”
