Welsh band Stereophonics frontman Kelly Jones has shared his favourite film and he says it is “overlooked by The Godfather”. When talking in an interview with Round & About Magazine in 2022, he discussed his favourite films. The indie star is currently on Stereophonics’ stadium anthems tour, which began in North America and is now making its way through Europe.
Jones told Round & About Magazine that The Deer Hunter was his favourite film. He said: “One of my favourite films is The Deer Hunter which sometimes gets overlooked by The Godfather.”
Jones added: “The thing about the deer Hunter it’s like two or three films in one and the landscape of it reminds me a lot of Cwmaman where I grew up.”
The film’s synopsis, via IMDb reads: “An in-depth examination of the ways in which the Vietnam War impacts and disrupts the lives of several friends in a small steel mill town in Pennsylvania.”
The 1978 American epic war drama film was co-written and directed by Michael Cimino.
It stars Robert De Niro, Christopher Walken and John Savage, with John Cazale (in his final role), Meryl Streep and George Dzundza.
Jones added: “The first part of the film reminds me a lot of the guys around my area where they all joined the army and had coming home parties after the Falklands.
“So I’ve got quite an affinity to The Deer Hunter.”
The Deer Hunter won five Academy Awards for Best Picture, Best Director (for Cimino), Best Supporting Actor (for Walken), Best Sound and Best Film Editing. It was also Meryl Streep’s first Academy Award nomination (for Best Supporting Actress).
Reminiscing on his childhood, Jones said: “My older brothers were always playing movies I probably shouldn’t have been watching as a kid.
“I love Jack Nicholson and I love Stanley Kubrick all those kind of classics. Mike Nichols was always a good director as well.”
