Spiders and insects can be a nuisance to deal with, especially when windows and doors are left open during the summer to let in some cool air. However, if they’ve become a persistent problem, one cleaning fan shared a simple solution which will prevent them from crawling into houses.
TikToker Vernon, who goes by Cleaning with Beelzebub, offered a natural remedy which uses just two ingredients. One ingredient spiders absolutely detest. Vernon said: “If you hate spiders and bugs in your home, you’ll find these hacks super helpful.”
Luckily, you won’t need a plethora of ingredients to create this DIY bug spray, but instead just two items. Come armed with a spray bottle, some water, and peppermint oil.
Add one cup of water to the spray bottle along with 15 to 20 drops of peppermint oil. Vernon said: “Make sure you’re spraying the solution on any entry points of the home, including window and door seals. I also like to go around my artificial plants.
“Not only does this solution repel, but it’s also a great way to keep the home smelling lush.”
If you’re looking to combine this insect repellent with a cleaning method, Vernon recommended adding a five to ten drops of the peppermint oil on a duster. This can be helpful for harder to reach spots.
This can help catch any cobwebs in the corners of the ceiling, and help prevent spiders from coming back and building them again.
Zoflora explained that spiders aren’t fans of strong scents, including citrus, peppermint, tea-tree, lavender, rose or cinnamon. One theory behind this is because spiders smell and taste with their legs, so they will avoid surfaces with strong odours.
It’s advisable that people with pets should avoid using peppermint oil in their homes. Peppermint oil, among other essential oils, can be toxic to pets if ingested or inhaled.
It can cause serious health issues, including liver damage, breathing difficulties, and neurological problems. It can also cause symptoms like diarrhea, vomiting, weakness, and lethargy.
