Spiders can be a common occurrence when you leave your windows open during the heat. However they can become a nuisance and make their way into your home.
To combat unwanted pests, cleaning fan and TikTok creator Chantel Mila, who goes by Mama Mila on the app, shared a simple homemade remedy. What’s even better is that it’s all natural, so you won’t need to turn to any commercial spider repellents. All you’ll need is one common ingredient you’ll find in the cupboard.
How to repel spiders
Many people tend to turn towards essential oils to help get rid of spiders from their homes. The likes of peppermint and citrus oils usually work best.
However, Chantel suggested that there’s another kitchen ingredient that can also do the job. Instead of essential oils, Chantel used salt mixed with water.
Creating a natural saline solution can be added to a spray bottle and spritzed around the house. The salt spray can be sprayed on various surfaces and openings around the house, including door frames and window sills.
The reason why salt works well to deter spiders is because it’s actually poisonous to them, according to Purcor Pest. Salt works as a natural repellent because of its dehydrating properties.
Spiders also hate strong, potent scents, which salt can also emanate. When spiders come into contact with salt – or the salty solution – it draws out the moisture away from the pest’s exoskeleton and internal tissues, potentially causing it to dry out and die.
Some websites suggest that salt can also be used as a natural insecticide, potentially killing spiders by disrupting their internal processes.
As this is a natural spider repellent, it works most effectively when used consistently.
Purcor said: “As you work to get rid of spiders in your home it’s also important to keep in mind, some spiders can help control other pests including mosquitoes and ants.
“Hunting spiders, in particular, play a significant role in controlling insect populations.”
However, after using the spray, it’s best to clean it up and remove any residue. If not, surfaces can be left covered in salt.
