Speculation mounts Rishi Sunak favours an October General Election

Rishi Sunak is favouring an October General Election amid fears “November could be mad enough” with American voters also going to the polls.

The Prime Minister is hoping to overturn a 20-point deficit in the opinion polls and prevent Labour from securing power.

But strategists are said to be concerned about global chaos if Donald Trump wins the US elections.

Mr Sunak had reportedly been considering November 14 as a polling day. But the Prime Minister is also expected to travel to Brazil for the G20 several days later.

The US election is being held on November 5. A victory for Donald Trump will spark concern about America’s commitment to NATO and whether Washington would defend a European country if it was attacked by Vladimir Putin.

One senior source said: “All the mood music is pointing to October now. There’s a feeling November could be mad enough.”

Downing Street declined to comment, insisting that talk of a specific election date was speculation.

The prime minister wants as much time as possible for tax cuts to take effect in a bid to close the gap in the polls.

Mr Sunak is also hoping to deport Channel migrants to Rwanda in a bid to show the country he can grip the small boats crisis.
