Spain is not about to see a let-up in the extremely high temperatures it has been facing for the past few weeks any time soon, as temperatures for much of the rest of July will remain scorching. Just a few weeks after the popular holiday country recorded its hottest June on record, with temperatures hitting 46C in El Granado, in the Andalucían province of Huelva, a new heatwave is on its way.
According to new weather maps by WXCharts, residents and tourists will have to brace for temperatures of 40C and above across much of the country, including near Spain’s most popular cities like Madrid, Seville and Valencia. The maps, showing weather for July 15 onwards, show much of the country covered in dark red, with temperatures rarely below 32C apart from right by the coast. The highest temperatures look set to be seen in the region around Seville, a city often dubbed the “frying pan of Europe” due to its extremely hot summer temperatures.
A weather map dated Tuesday, July 15, shows temperatures of up to 42C, with the region near Seville covered by rarely seen patches of white. The over-40C temperatures extend northwards, also hitting the pretty city of Badajoz near the Portuguese border. Even in the cooler northern regions, temperatures are predicted to remain in the mid-30Cs in the area around Barcelona and Tarragona.
Yet these temperatures look positively balmy compared with a later map dated Thursday, July 24. Here, temperatures of up to 45C are predicted, according to WXCharts. The affected region spreads from near Cadiz on the southern coast, almost as far north as the capital, Madrid. Further north, temperatures of around 40 to 42C are predicted near Zaragoza and Barcelona. Even by the coast near Valencia, temperatures of around 40C are expected.
There does not appear to be much let-up earlier that week, on Monday, July 21. While not quite as hot as later in the week, temperatures of between 40 and 43C are expected across much of the country, including near Zaragoza and Barcelona as well as Madrid, Seville, and Cordoba.
This latest heatwave comes as southern Europe continues to bake under almost unrelenting temperatures. On Tuesday, a wildfire ripped through the municipality of Les Pennes-Mirabeau near Marseille, leading to flights being grounded at the airport. Last month, around 50,000 residents in Turkey were evacuated amid blistering wildfires affecting several areas, including Izmir, Manisa, Seferihisar, and the Hatay region.
